Describing Nouns with Adjectives

Self-Study Guide
2/12

What are Adjectives?

Definition:

Adjectives are words that describe or give more information about nouns (people, places, things, or animals).

📝 Arabic speakers note: Unlike Arabic, English adjectives don't change their form based on gender or number - they stay the same!

Examples:

big house
(بيت كبير)
beautiful car
(سيارة جميلة)
cold water
(ماء بارد)
happy children
(أطفال سعداء)

Rule 1: Position of Adjectives

In English, adjectives usually come BEFORE the noun they describe.

Adjective + Noun

Examples:

• a big house

• a beautiful car

cold water

happy children

• an old man

• a red dress

⚠️ Important: Notice the adjective doesn't change - we say "happy child" AND "happy children" (not "happys children")

Rule 2: Using "BE" verbs with Adjectives

When the adjective comes AFTER the noun, use a "be" verb.

Noun + be + Adjective

BE verbs: am, is, are, was, were

• The house is big

• The car is beautiful

• The water is cold

• The children are happy

• I am tired

• You are smart

Compare:

Before noun:

a big house

After noun:

The house is big

Age: old, new, young
Color: red, blue, green
