πŸ“ What is a Paragraph?

Let's start with the basics. What exactly is a paragraph, and why do we need them?

A paragraph is a group of sentences about one main idea. When you write, you organise your ideas into paragraphs so the reader can follow your thoughts easily.

Think of it this way: A paragraph is like a room in a house. Each room has one purpose (bedroom for sleeping, kitchen for cooking). If you put a bed in the kitchen, it would be confusing! Each paragraph should have one clear purpose too.

The 4 Main Parts of a Paragraph

Every good paragraph has these parts working together:

1. Topic Sentence
The FIRST sentence. It tells the reader what the paragraph is about.
2. Supporting Sentences
They give reasons, examples, and details to explain the topic sentence.
3. Details & Examples
Specific facts, numbers, or examples that make your ideas stronger.
4. Closing Sentence
The LAST sentence. It restates the main idea or gives a final thought.

πŸ” The Burger Paragraph Model

The best way to remember paragraph structure is to think of a burger!

Just like a burger has layers that make it delicious, a paragraph has layers that make it strong and clear. Each layer has an important job. Let's see what they are:

🍞 TOP BUN β€” Topic Sentence Introduces the main idea. Holds everything together from the top.
πŸ₯¬ LETTUCE β€” Supporting Sentence 1 Your first reason or explanation.
πŸ… TOMATO β€” Example / Evidence A specific example or fact that proves your point.
πŸ§€ CHEESE β€” Supporting Sentence 2 Another reason or detail to make your idea stronger.
πŸ₯© PATTY β€” Detail / Explanation The "meat" β€” your most important information.
🍞 BOTTOM BUN β€” Closing Sentence Restates the idea or gives a final thought. Holds everything together from the bottom.
πŸ”‘ Key Rule: The two buns (topic + closing) must match! If your top bun is about "cats are great pets," your bottom bun shouldn't suddenly talk about dogs. Everything between the buns must fit the same "flavour" β€” the same topic!

Topic Sentence Supporting Detail / Example Closing Sentence
EXAMPLE PARAGRAPH Swimming is one of the best exercises for staying healthy. First, it works every muscle in your body, from your arms to your legs. For example, just 30 minutes of swimming burns around 250 calories. In addition, swimming is gentle on your joints, so it is good for people of all ages. Many doctors recommend swimming for older adults who have knee or back problems. For all these reasons, swimming is an excellent way to keep your body strong and fit.

🎯 Match the Burger Layer

1 The "top bun" of a burger paragraph is the…

2 Why must everything "between the buns" be about the same topic?

3 What does the closing sentence (bottom bun) do?

✏️ How to Write a Good Title

A title is the first thing people read. It should be short, clear, and tell the reader what the paragraph is about.

Rules for a Good Title

1️⃣
Keep it short β€” Usually 2 to 8 words. A title is not a sentence.
2️⃣
Capitalise important words β€” Capitalise nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Do NOT capitalise small words like "a, an, the, of, in, and" (unless they are the first word).
3️⃣
No full stop (period) β€” Titles don't end with a period. You may use a question mark or exclamation mark if needed.
4️⃣
Centre it β€” The title is usually centred at the top of the page.
5️⃣
Match the content β€” The title should match what the paragraph is about. Don't use a creative title that confuses the reader.
βœ“ GOOD TITLES

The Benefits of Swimming
My Favourite Season
Why Reading Is Important
Life in a Big City

βœ— BAD TITLES

the benefits of swimming.
(no capitals, has a period)
I Will Tell You About My Favourite Season And Why I Love It So Much
(way too long!)

🎯 Fix the Title!

1 Which is the CORRECT title?

2 What should you NOT put at the end of a title?

3 Which words should you NOT capitalise in a title?

πŸ“ Formatting Your Paragraph

A paragraph isn't just about the words β€” how it LOOKS on the page matters too!

1. Indent the First Line

The first line of every paragraph should start a little bit to the right. This is called an indent. It tells the reader: "A new paragraph is starting here!"

βœ“ CORRECT

Swimming is one of the best exercises. It works every muscle in your body and is gentle on your joints.

βœ— INCORRECT

Swimming is one of the best exercises. It works every muscle in your body and is gentle on your joints.

2. Double Spacing

Double spacing means leaving extra space between each line. This makes your paragraph easier to read and gives space for corrections.

βœ“ DOUBLE SPACED

Swimming is one of the best exercises for staying healthy. It works every muscle in your body. In addition, it is gentle on your joints.

βœ— SINGLE SPACED

Swimming is one of the best exercises for staying healthy. It works every muscle in your body. In addition, it is gentle on your joints.

3. Margins

A margin is the empty space on the left and right sides of your text. Margins give your paragraph a clean, professional look. Usually, you leave about 2.5 cm (1 inch) on each side.

🎯 Stay on Topic! β€” Keep Your Burger Tasty

Every ingredient in your burger must match the flavour. If your burger is a cheeseburger, don't put ice cream in the middle!

⚠️ The #1 Mistake: Adding sentences that don't belong. If your paragraph is about "the benefits of reading," don't suddenly write about your favourite TV show. That's like putting fish in a chocolate cake β€” it doesn't fit!

How to Check: The "Does It Fit?" Test

For EVERY sentence, ask yourself: "Does this sentence help explain my topic sentence?"

If the answer is YES β†’ Keep it! βœ…

If the answer is NO β†’ Remove it! ❌

Example: Find the Sentence That Doesn't Belong

WHICH SENTENCE DOESN'T BELONG? Dogs make wonderful family pets. They are loyal and always happy to see you when you come home. Dogs can be trained to follow commands like "sit" and "stay." My neighbour has a beautiful garden with roses. Also, dogs love to play with children, which makes them great companions for families. In conclusion, dogs are one of the best pets a family can have.
Answer: "My neighbour has a beautiful garden with roses" does NOT belong! It has nothing to do with dogs being good pets. It's like putting a slice of pizza inside your burger β€” wrong flavour!

🎯 Find the "Wrong Ingredient"!

Which sentence does NOT belong in each paragraph?

1 Topic: The Benefits of Exercise
Which sentence does NOT belong?

2 Topic: Why I Love Summer
Which sentence does NOT belong?

3 Topic: Learning a New Language
Which sentence does NOT belong?
