TEACHING — WHAT IS A PARAGRAPH?

📐 Understanding a Paragraph

A paragraph is a group of sentences about ONE main idea. It is not just random sentences — every sentence must be connected to the same idea.

🏠 Think of a paragraph like a house:
The title is the name on the door — it tells people what house this is.
The topic sentence is the foundation — it holds everything together.
The supporting sentences are the walls — they build the house and make it strong.
The concluding sentence is the roof — it closes and completes the house.

Every paragraph in your exam MUST have these 4 parts:

① TITLE (1.5 marks)
What is it? A short name for the paragraph (2–6 words). It is NOT a sentence.
Where? Above the paragraph, centered.
② TOPIC SENTENCE (2 marks)
What is it? The FIRST sentence. It tells the reader: "This paragraph is about ___."
It has 2 parts: Topic (what you talk about) + Controlling Idea (what you say about it).
③ SUPPORTING SENTENCES × 3 (4.5 marks = 1.5 × 3)
What are they? The middle sentences. They give reasons, examples, and facts.
Rule: Each one MUST start with a transitional word/phrase + comma.
④ CONCLUDING SENTENCE (2 marks)
What is it? The LAST sentence. It says the same idea as the topic sentence but in DIFFERENT words.
Rule: Starts with a transitional word/phrase + comma. NO new information!

Let's see a FULL example paragraph. Look at the colors carefully:

🏷️ Title 🎯 Topic Sentence 🔗 Transition 🧱 Supporting 🔚 Concluding
Harmful Effects of Junk Food
Junk food is harmful to our health for several reasons. First of all, junk food contains a lot of sugar and fat, which can cause obesity. In addition, eating too much junk food can lead to heart disease and diabetes. Furthermore, junk food has very few vitamins and minerals, so our body does not get the nutrients it needs. For these reasons, junk food is very dangerous for our health.
💡
Notice: The topic sentence says "junk food is harmful" and the concluding sentence says "junk food is very dangerous." They say the SAME idea but with DIFFERENT words. This is exactly what you need to do!

✏️ Practice: Can You Identify the Parts?

Test your understanding of paragraph structure

1 How many parts does a paragraph have?

a) 2 parts
b) 3 parts
c) 4 parts (Title, Topic Sentence, Supporting Sentences, Concluding Sentence)
d) 5 parts

2 Which part tells the reader the MAIN IDEA of the paragraph?

a) The title
b) The topic sentence
c) The supporting sentences
d) The concluding sentence

3 What does the concluding sentence do?

a) It adds new information to the paragraph
b) It restates the main idea in different words
c) It asks a question
d) It gives an example

4 Look at the example paragraph above. Which sentence is the TOPIC SENTENCE?

a) "Junk food is harmful to our health for several reasons."
b) "Junk food contains a lot of sugar and fat, which can cause obesity."
c) "Harmful Effects of Junk Food"
d) "Junk food is very dangerous for our health."

5 How many supporting sentences do you need in the exam?

a) 1
b) 2
c) 3
d) 4
TEACHING — THE TITLE

🏷️ What is a Title?

A title is the name of your paragraph. It is written above the paragraph. It tells the reader what the paragraph is about in just a few words.

A title is NOT a sentence. It is a short phrase. Think of it like the name of a movie or a book — short and clear.

📦 Imagine a box. The title is the label on the box. If you see a box labeled "Chocolates," you know what's inside. Your title tells the reader what's inside the paragraph!

📏 Rules for Writing a Good Title

1 It is SHORT — usually 2 to 6 words. Not a full sentence!

2 No period (.) at the end — because it is not a sentence.

3 Capitalize important words — big words start with a capital letter. Small words like "of," "the," "for," "and," "in" do NOT get capitals (unless they are the first word).

4 It includes the TOPIC + CONTROLLING IDEA — from the topic sentence.

🔍 How to Find the Title (Step by Step)

1 Read the topic sentence carefully.
Example: "People should not take too much aspirin for many reasons."

2 Find the TOPIC — What is the paragraph about?
→ The paragraph is about aspirin.

3 Find the CONTROLLING IDEA — What is the paragraph saying about it?
→ The paragraph says aspirin has harmful effects.

4 Combine them into a short phrase!
→ Topic + Controlling Idea = Harmful Effects of Aspirin

💡
Extra Trick: Also look at the concluding sentence! It often contains the same key words. In our example, the concluding sentence says "harmful effects of aspirin" — that's your title right there!

✅ Good Titles vs. ❌ Bad Titles

Harmful Effects of Aspirin
Short phrase, has topic + controlling idea, capitals correct, no period
Aspirin is very bad for your body.
This is a full sentence with a period — titles are NOT sentences!
Benefits of Exercise
Clear, short, has topic (exercise) + controlling idea (benefits)
exercise
Too short! No controlling idea. No capital letter.
Uses of Smartphones
Topic = smartphones, Controlling Idea = uses
Why People Should Use Smartphones Because They Are Useful for Many Things
Too long! This is a sentence, not a title.
⚠️
Common Mistakes Students Make:
1. Writing a full sentence instead of a phrase
2. Putting a period at the end
3. Forgetting capital letters
4. Writing only the topic without the controlling idea (e.g., just "Aspirin" instead of "Harmful Effects of Aspirin")

✏️ Practice: Title Writing

Now YOU try! Answer each question, then check your answer.

1 Which one is a GOOD title?

a) There are many advantages of reading books.
b) Advantages of Reading
c) reading
d) Books.

2 What is WRONG with this title: "Water is very important for our health."

a) It is a full sentence — titles should be short phrases, not sentences
b) It is too short
c) It doesn't have capital letters
d) Nothing is wrong

3 Write a title for this topic sentence:

"There are several benefits of drinking water every day."

✅ Best Answer: Benefits of Drinking Water

Also acceptable: "Benefits of Water" or "Importance of Drinking Water"

Why? Topic = drinking water. Controlling idea = benefits. We combine them: "Benefits of Drinking Water." Notice: it's a short phrase, not a sentence. No period. Capital letters on "Benefits," "Drinking," "Water." The small word "of" stays lowercase.

4 Write a title for this topic sentence:

"There are many reasons why students should study every day."

✅ Best Answer: Reasons for Studying Every Day

Also acceptable: "Importance of Daily Study" / "Benefits of Studying Every Day"

Why? Topic = studying every day. Controlling idea = many reasons (why they should). So we get: "Reasons for Studying Every Day."

5 🎯 EXAM-STYLE: Write a suitable title for this paragraph:

People should not take too much of aspirin for many reasons. First of all, excessive use of aspirin for pains harms the body. People are used to taking aspirin whenever they feel pain. It is true that aspirin is an effective pain killer, for example in headache cases. Any unregulated use of it may result in the damage of the stomach, prolonged bleeding time, nausea, vomiting, ulcers, liver damage and hepatitis. Another reason is that it turns to poison if used excessively. It is scientifically proven that excessive use of aspirin turns it into a toxin affecting cells and functions of our body. Thus, these are some of the harmful effects of aspirin.

✅ Answer: Harmful Effects of Aspirin

Step-by-step how we got it:
1. Read the topic sentence: "People should not take too much of aspirin for many reasons."
2. Topic = aspirin
3. Controlling idea = should not take too much (= harmful effects)
4. Read the concluding sentence: "these are some of the harmful effects of aspirin"
5. Combine: Harmful Effects of Aspirin

Notice: "Harmful" and "Effects" and "Aspirin" have capital letters. "of" is lowercase. No period at the end. It is NOT a sentence.
TEACHING — THE TOPIC SENTENCE

🎯 What is a Topic Sentence?

A topic sentence is the FIRST sentence of a paragraph. It is the most important sentence because it tells the reader: "This is what my paragraph is about."
🗺️ Think of a topic sentence like a map. Before you go on a trip, you look at the map to know where you're going. The topic sentence is the map for your paragraph — it tells the reader where the paragraph is going!

🧩 The 2 Parts of a Topic Sentence

Every topic sentence has TWO important parts:

1 TOPIC = What is the paragraph about?
This is the subject — the thing or person or idea you are writing about.
Examples: aspirin, smartphones, bananas, exercise, pollution

2 CONTROLLING IDEA = What are you saying about the topic?
This controls what the supporting sentences will talk about. It limits the paragraph to ONE specific idea.
Examples: harmful effects, several uses, very healthy, many differences

🔬 Let's Break Down Examples

Example 1:
"There are many differences between reptiles and dinosaurs."
🔍 Topic = reptiles and dinosaurs
🔍 Controlling Idea = many differences
👉 The supporting sentences will talk about DIFFERENCES. Not similarities!

Example 2:
"Bananas are one of the healthiest fruits for many reasons."
🔍 Topic = bananas
🔍 Controlling Idea = healthiest fruits
👉 The supporting sentences will talk about why bananas are HEALTHY. Not about the taste!

Example 3:
"There are several uses of smartphones."
🔍 Topic = smartphones
🔍 Controlling Idea = several uses
👉 The supporting sentences will talk about USES. Not about prices!

🔍 How to Write a Topic Sentence (When you're given a paragraph without one)

1 Read ALL the sentences in the paragraph — don't rush!

2 Ask: "What is the ONE main idea?" — What do ALL the sentences talk about?

3 Look at the TITLE — it gives you a big hint! The title has the topic + controlling idea.

4 Look at the CONCLUDING sentence — it restates the main idea. Use it as a clue!

5 Write a GENERAL sentence that covers all the supporting points. It should not be too specific.

"There are many differences between reptiles and dinosaurs."
General — covers size, legs, temperature (all the points in the paragraph)
"Dinosaurs are bigger than reptiles."
Too specific! This is only ONE supporting point, not the main idea.
⚠️
Common Mistakes:
1. Writing a sentence that is too specific (only about ONE point)
2. Forgetting the controlling idea (just saying "This paragraph is about smartphones.")
3. Making it a question ("Do you know about smartphones?") — it must be a statement!

✏️ Practice: Topic Sentences

Let's practice finding and writing topic sentences!

1 What are the 2 parts of a topic sentence?

a) Title and Conclusion
b) Subject and Verb
c) Topic and Controlling Idea
d) Introduction and Body

2 Identify the TOPIC and CONTROLLING IDEA:

"There are several advantages of learning English."
a) Topic = advantages, Controlling Idea = learning English
b) Topic = learning English, Controlling Idea = several advantages
c) Topic = several, Controlling Idea = learning
d) Topic = there are, Controlling Idea = English

3 Which is the BEST topic sentence for a paragraph about "Benefits of Exercise"?

a) "Do you like exercise?"
b) "Exercise helps you sleep better."
c) "Exercise has many benefits for our body and mind."
d) "Exercise."

4 Write a topic sentence for this paragraph:

Title: Advantages of Online Shopping

___________________________________. First of all, you can shop from the comfort of your home without going to the store. In addition, online stores are open 24 hours, so you can shop at any time. Furthermore, you can compare prices from many different shops easily. In conclusion, online shopping makes our lives much easier.

✅ Answer: There are many advantages of online shopping.

How we got it:
1. The TITLE says "Advantages of Online Shopping" → Topic = online shopping, Controlling idea = advantages
2. The supporting sentences talk about: shop from home, shop any time, compare prices → all are ADVANTAGES
3. The concluding sentence says "online shopping makes our lives much easier" → confirms the idea of advantages
4. So the topic sentence = "There are many advantages of online shopping." ✅

5 🎯 EXAM-STYLE: Write a topic sentence for this paragraph:

Title: Reptiles and Dinosaurs

___________________________________. One is size. Most modern reptiles are small. Dinosaurs were much larger than any reptile we have on earth today. Second, the legs of most reptiles today are on the sides of their body. However, dinosaurs' legs were on the bottom of their body. In this way, dinosaurs could stand up on their legs. Third, today's reptiles use the environment to control their body temperature. In contrast, dinosaurs controlled their own body temperature. They did not depend on their surroundings. To conclude, even though reptiles and dinosaurs may seem very similar, they are actually quite different.

✅ Answer: There are many differences between reptiles and dinosaurs.

Step-by-step:
1. Title = "Reptiles and Dinosaurs" → Topic = reptiles and dinosaurs
2. Supporting sentences talk about differences in: size, legs, body temperature → Controlling idea = differences
3. Concluding sentence says "they are actually quite different" → confirms: the idea is about DIFFERENCES
4. The word "One" in the first supporting sentence is a clue — it means "one difference"
5. So: "There are many differences between reptiles and dinosaurs." ✅
TEACHING — SUPPORTING SENTENCES

🧱 What are Supporting Sentences?

Supporting sentences are the sentences in the MIDDLE of your paragraph. They come after the topic sentence and before the concluding sentence. Their job is to explain, prove, and give details about the controlling idea in your topic sentence.
🪑 Think of a chair. The topic sentence is the seat. The supporting sentences are the legs. A chair needs legs to stand — your paragraph needs supporting sentences to be strong! In the exam, you need 3 legs (3 supporting sentences).

📏 Rules for Supporting Sentences

1 You need EXACTLY 3 supporting sentences in the exam (each one = 1.5 marks).

2 Every supporting sentence MUST start with a transitional word/phrase + COMMA.
✅ "First of all, smartphones help us communicate."
❌ "Smartphones help us communicate." (Missing transitional word!)

3 Every sentence must connect to the CONTROLLING IDEA.
If your topic sentence says "uses of smartphones," every supporting sentence must talk about a USE.
❌ "Smartphones are expensive." — This is about PRICE, not uses! OFF TOPIC!

4 Give reasons, examples, or facts.
Don't just repeat the topic sentence — give NEW information that explains it.

📝 How to Write Supporting Sentences (Step by Step)

1 Read the topic sentence. Find the controlling idea.
"There are several uses of smartphones." → I need to write about USES.

2 Think of 3 different points that match the controlling idea.
Use 1: communication | Use 2: internet/learning | Use 3: entertainment

3 Start each sentence with a DIFFERENT transitional word + comma.
Sentence 1: "First of all, ..."
Sentence 2: "In addition, ..."
Sentence 3: "Furthermore, ..."

4 Write the full sentence with details.
"First of all, smartphones help us to communicate easily with our family and friends through calls, messages, and social media."

Topic Sentence: "There are several uses of smartphones."

First of all, smartphones help us to communicate easily with our family and friends through calls, messages, and social media.

In addition, we can use smartphones to search for information on the internet and learn new things every day.

Furthermore, smartphones have many useful apps for entertainment, such as games, music, and videos.
⚠️
Top 3 Mistakes Students Make:
1. Forgetting the transitional word: "Smartphones help us communicate." ❌ → "First of all, smartphones help us communicate." ✅
2. Going off topic: If the controlling idea is "uses," don't write about "disadvantages" or "prices."
3. Repeating the same point: Each sentence must talk about a DIFFERENT reason/example.

✏️ Practice: Supporting Sentences

Practice writing and identifying supporting sentences!

1 What is WRONG with this supporting sentence?

"Smartphones are very expensive these days."
(Topic sentence: "There are several uses of smartphones.")
a) It is too short
b) It is off-topic — it talks about PRICE, not USES
c) It has a grammar mistake
d) Nothing is wrong

2 What is MISSING from this supporting sentence?

"Smartphones help us to communicate with family and friends."
a) It needs more words
b) It needs a period
c) It needs a transitional word/phrase at the beginning (e.g., "First of all,")
d) It needs a question mark

3 Fix this sentence by adding a transitional word:

"Water helps to keep our skin healthy and fresh."

✅ Answer: "In addition, water helps to keep our skin healthy and fresh."

Other correct options: "Furthermore, ..." / "Also, ..." / "Next, ..." — Any transitional word + comma is correct!

4 Write 3 supporting sentences for this topic sentence:

Topic Sentence: "There are many benefits of exercise."

✅ Sample Answers (many answers possible!):

1. First of all, exercise makes our body strong and helps us to stay healthy.

2. In addition, exercise helps us to sleep better at night and feel more relaxed.

3. Furthermore, regular exercise can prevent diseases like heart disease and diabetes.

Check yourself:
✅ Each starts with a different transitional word + comma?
✅ Each talks about a BENEFIT of exercise (matches the controlling idea)?
✅ Each gives a different point (not repeating)?

5 🎯 EXAM-STYLE: Write 3 supporting sentences:

Title: Uses of Smartphones

Topic Sentence: "There are several uses of smartphones."

✅ Sample Answers:

1. First of all, smartphones help us to communicate easily with our family and friends through calls, messages, and social media.

2. In addition, we can use smartphones to search for information on the internet and learn new things every day.

3. Furthermore, smartphones have many useful apps for entertainment, such as games, music, and videos.

Remember: Your answers don't need to be exactly the same! Any 3 different USES with transitional words + commas are correct.
TEACHING — THE CONCLUDING SENTENCE

🔚 What is a Concluding Sentence?

A concluding sentence is the LAST sentence of your paragraph. It restates (says again) the main idea from the topic sentence, but uses DIFFERENT words. It tells the reader: "This is the end, and this is what I said."
🎁 Think of wrapping a present. The topic sentence is the present inside. The concluding sentence is the wrapping paper — it covers the same present, but it looks different on the outside. Same idea, different words!

📏 Rules for the Concluding Sentence

1 It MUST start with a transitional word/phrase + COMMA.
✅ "For these reasons, bananas are very healthy."
❌ "Bananas are very healthy." (Where is the transition?!)

2 It restates the SAME idea as the topic sentence.
Topic sentence: "Bananas are one of the healthiest fruits."
Concluding: "Bananas are very healthy."
✅ Same idea! (healthy = healthiest fruits)

3 It uses DIFFERENT words — do NOT copy the topic sentence!
❌ "For these reasons, bananas are one of the healthiest fruits for many reasons." (This is just a copy!)
✅ "For these reasons, bananas are very healthy." (Same idea, different words!)

4 Do NOT add new information!
❌ "For these reasons, bananas are very healthy and they are also cheap." (New information about price!)
✅ "For these reasons, bananas are very healthy." (Only restating!)

🔗 Transitional Words for Concluding Sentences

For these reasons,  ・  In conclusion,  ・  To conclude,  ・  To sum up,  ・  In summary,  ・  Thus,  ・  Therefore,  ・  All in all,

🔬 Let's See How It Works

Example 1:
Topic Sentence: "Junk food is harmful to our health for several reasons."
Concluding: "For these reasons, junk food is very dangerous for our health."
✅ harmful = dangerous (different words, same idea!)

Example 2:
Topic Sentence: "There are many differences between reptiles and dinosaurs."
Concluding: "To conclude, even though reptiles and dinosaurs may seem very similar, they are actually quite different."
✅ differences = quite different (same idea!)

Example 3:
Topic Sentence: "Bananas are one of the healthiest fruits for many reasons."
Concluding: "For these reasons, bananas are very healthy."
✅ healthiest fruits = very healthy (same idea, shorter!)
⚠️
DO NOT forget the comma after the transitional word!
✅ "For these reasons, bananas are very healthy."
❌ "For these reasons bananas are very healthy." (MISSING COMMA = lose marks!)

✏️ Practice: Concluding Sentences

Practice writing concluding sentences!

1 What is WRONG with this concluding sentence?

Topic Sentence: "There are many benefits of exercise."
Concluding: "Also, exercise can help you make new friends."
a) It doesn't have a transitional word
b) It adds NEW information instead of restating the main idea
c) It is too short
d) Nothing is wrong

2 Which is the BEST concluding sentence?

Topic Sentence: "There are many advantages of online shopping."
a) "Online shopping is also available in Bahrain."
b) "There are many advantages of online shopping."
c) "In conclusion, online shopping has many great benefits."
d) "I love online shopping very much."

3 Write a concluding sentence:

Topic Sentence: "There are many benefits of exercise."

✅ Sample Answers:
"For these reasons, exercise is very good for our health."
"In conclusion, exercise has many positive effects on our body."
"To sum up, exercising regularly is very beneficial."

Check yourself: ✅ Transitional word + comma? ✅ Same idea as topic sentence? ✅ Different words? ✅ No new information?

4 Write a concluding sentence:

Topic Sentence: "There are several reasons why pollution is dangerous."

✅ Sample Answers:
"For these reasons, pollution is very harmful."
"In conclusion, pollution causes many serious problems."
"Therefore, pollution is a great danger to our world."

Notice: dangerous → harmful / great danger / serious problems (same idea, different words!)

5 🎯 EXAM-STYLE: Write a concluding sentence for this paragraph:

Bananas are one of the healthiest fruits for many reasons. First of all, bananas contain special vitamins and minerals. Most of these vitamins and minerals help us to stay healthy. Eating just one banana every day will help us to get many different nutrients and energy. Next, eating bananas can help prevent several diseases. Many studies show that potassium present in bananas help to prevent heart diseases. In addition, bananas are good for digestion. They can be digested easily. ___________________________________.

✅ Answer: For these reasons, bananas are very healthy.

Step-by-step:
1. Read topic sentence: "Bananas are one of the healthiest fruits for many reasons."
2. Main idea = bananas + healthiest/healthy
3. Restate in different words: "healthiest fruits" → "very healthy"
4. Add transitional word + comma: "For these reasons,"
5. Final: "For these reasons, bananas are very healthy." ✅

Other correct answers: "In conclusion, bananas are a very healthy fruit." / "To sum up, bananas are one of the best fruits for our health."
TEACHING — TRANSITIONAL WORDS & PHRASES

🔗 Transitional Words & Phrases

Transitional words and phrases are special words that connect your sentences. They make your paragraph smooth and easy to read. They tell the reader: "Here comes the first point," "Here's another point," or "This is the end."
🚦 Think of traffic signals. Green means "go — first point!" Yellow means "adding more!" Red means "stopping — conclusion!" Transitional words are the signals in your paragraph — they guide the reader from one sentence to the next.
