📚 Part 1: Understanding Sentence Errors

1. Run-on Sentences

Definition: Two or more complete sentences incorrectly joined without proper punctuation or conjunctions.

❌ Incorrect: The students studied hard they passed the test.

✓ Correct: The students studied hard, and they passed the test.

✓ Correct: The students studied hard; they passed the test.

2. Comma Splices

Definition: Two complete sentences incorrectly joined with only a comma.

❌ Incorrect: The weather was cold, we wore our jackets.

✓ Correct: The weather was cold, so we wore our jackets.

✓ Correct: The weather was cold. We wore our jackets.

3. Fragments

Definition: Incomplete sentences missing essential parts.

A. Missing Subject:

❌ Fragment: Ran quickly to catch the bus.

✓ Complete: Sarah ran quickly to catch the bus.

B. Missing Verb:

❌ Fragment: The tall student in the back row.

✓ Complete: The tall student in the back row raised his hand.

C. Missing Independent Clause (Subordinate Clause Fragments):

❌ Fragment: Because the movie was too long.

✓ Complete: We left early because the movie was too long.

❌ Fragment: When the teacher explained the lesson.

✓ Complete: The students understood when the teacher explained the lesson.

❌ Fragment: While eating lunch in the cafeteria.

✓ Complete: While eating lunch in the cafeteria, we discussed our project.
